Make room for comfort parking.

Ikea's new store has opened in Karlsruhe. The consistent customer orientation is already evident in the parking garage. Only a few columns make parking easy. Located close to the city center, the parking garage is placed above the sales and warehouse areas. This brings fire resistance and aspects such as building volume, efficiency and sustainability into play. Therefore, Peikko's innovative solutions of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams come along.

Composite structure with new possibilities

In the design of the new building, the goods issue area of the store is located on the first parking level for the first time for reasons of space and not on the first floor as is usually the case. Accordingly, the floor heights of the three parking levels are designed differently. Due to its high ceiling height, the first level also allows access for vans and delivery trucks. The other parking levels are suitable for passenger cars in terms of their ceiling height.

At first glance, the inviting spatial atmosphere, especially of the first parking deck is impressive. And this is not just because of the clear height of the floor, but rather because of the smooth underside of the ceiling with no downstand beams at all and few columns. The reason for this is the design, planning and realization of the car park slabs based on Peikko's DELTABEAM® composite structure. The hollow core slabs are positioned in perpendicular direction to the traffic line and are supported by DELTABEAM® composite beams.

"The span of 16.20 meters creates the conditions for a wide roadway between the opposite parking lots," emphasizes Dipl.-Ing. Sascha Schaaf, Senior Engineer at Peikko Germany, "This creates parking lots and roadways without restrictive building columns."

In the Ikea car park, the DELTABEAM® composite beams themselves rest on precast concrete columns at a distance of 8.10 meters. The highlight is that they can be used to span three generously sized parking lots. In addition, the even slabs made it possible to install the building services easily and flatly. This creates an open space design that makes parking as easy as can be. Visitors to the new Ikea store are given an inviting, pleasant feeling of space as soon as they park.

Design with a vision

When taking a holistic view of the realization of the Ikea car park, the focus is not only on the plus points of daily use, but on the conceptual and long-term advantages. By using DELTABEAM® the floor heights of the parking decks could be reduced since the composite beams are integrated into the slab. This saved a lot of material, resources, and space. For enclosed spaces, this also has the advantage that less heating and cooling being required. Compared to a conventional construction method, the composite action of DELTABEAM® enabled the slabs to be designed with a reduced thickness and high material savings.
